Windmill Pub - Carrington
Topic posted by Mike ... dated:20 February 2008
I've driven past this pub hundreds of times but never stopped to try it out. Anyone out there know if it's worth stopping next time?

I visited the Windmill today and can confirm that it has re-opened. Nothing much seems to have changed. If anything, the beer (Old Brewery Bitter) is slightly better, but still the same price - £2 a pint.

The barman tells me that it re-opened a couple of weeks ago, under new management though still owned by Samuel Smith's. The only real changes are that the kitchen is still closed and unlikely to re-open any time soon (problem with the gas supply, apparently); and it's Cash Only over the bar - no debit or credit cards are accepted. I'm told that Sam's have banned bank cards across their entire estate, including food-led pubs like the Vine in Dunham Woodhouses.

I drove past the Windmill pub today (Tuesday 13th November) and noticed the shutters have been removed from the windows, and the large stone blocks preventing access to the car park were also removed. As there were some cars parked in the car park this may suggest activity to refurbish or reopen the pub. Does anyone have any further information on this?

It's still boarded up but as the brewery's website says, "We keep our pubs well maintained, being keen on conservation, and we don’t close them down, even in the most deprived areas". I expect they're seeking new tenants.

Apparently it is closed because the landlord left suddenly this weekend and will reopen when a new landlord is found (source : Urmston M41 Facebook group.)

Just to put you all in the picture, the landlady and landlord who up until recently ran the pub, did not move to the Tavern because of the smoking ban!!!lol!!! They are just great at their job and were asked to consider the move to the Tavern in Flixton because John was due to retire. There are plenty of smokers there too and its always full. Still a Sam Smiths house, still cheap prices and the landlady and landlord are full of fun!! Give it a go and enjoy.

Yes, the landlady and landlord have moved to the Tavern in Flixton as they said that since the no smoking ban came into force that they had very little customers/business so decided to move on.

Just wanted to agree with Matt_H, that everyone looks at you if you are not a regular. We went in the summer one evening, and left very shortly afterwards, as we felt like people were staring at us!

Can anyone say if it's still a Sam Smiths House? I notice now that for some time the White Rose logo and the Sam Smith's signs are missing on the outside walls?

We popped in there just recently. They have a nice beer garden at the back with a childrens play area. The beer is very cheap. They don't do food - apart from sandwiches which again are very cheap (£1.20). The bar staff were very friendly. The only thing is, when we went in it seemed like one of those pubs where when you walk in everyone turns around and looks at you as if to say "Are you local?". The decor isn't the best inside and some of the clientelle reminded me of the type that hang out in the Victoria on a Saturday afternoon.

The rumour is that the landlord and landlady of the Windmill are moving to the Railway Tavern.
You will find that all Sam Smiths pubs have no entertainment licence as its brewery policy, no jukebox or TV either.

We used to go to the Windmill a lot and always had a great time

Alot of us horse riders used to go for a lunch, seemed it was a meeting place for us then.

Even though we may have had our jods and boots on, and most propbably smelt a little horsey .. lol.. they welcomed us with open arms

Again though that was a long time ago

Oh the Memories are great :)
does anyone else remember those days ?

They had no entertainments licence last time I went in, but it has changed hands since. It is a nice pint in there, so try it out.
