History Talk on Urmston area
Topic posted by LisaK ... dated:10 July 2006
Just to let people know there is a talk on local history at St Clements church hall behind St Clements church on Thur 20 July at 7.45pm by John Howe. It is free but donations to church funds welcome, tea etc available. Mr Howe does it for nothing, I saw one a couple of years ago and it was very interesting, found things out I didn't know about the area. Worth a look.

David was so grateful to hostmaster David for allowing his A - Z to be hosted on here and the support for this, pre FB days, it was akin to a spiritual home for his studies, in the beginning from Canada. He had such a fondness for this site!

He attended the Woodsend history group and would come back with a great photo from Bob P. or Alan C. amongst others and post on here with insightful comments or use as a 'guess/where or what feature.

I think it may be another years 100 before another like him comes around. His considerable archive will be contained at the Local Studies Centre in Sale in time, for others to research & enjoy.

Rest well big man.

Sad news indeed. I was always in awe of his knowledge of Urmston from the time he lived in Canada. He will be missed.

RIP  Divad

Most sad.

The loss of a great presenter and recorder of the history of our area.

R.I.P. David.

I would just like to pay tribute to my friend and local historian David Smith whose online name was Divad on here. He sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer, as well as losing a lovely fella we've also lost a mine of information on the history of our area, a talented guy with his talks on local history being both informative and humourous. Rest in peace David, both myself and all from Urmston & District History Society will miss you so much.

This should be amalgamated with the "Thanks to John" topic but I opened it for the people who haven't any idea of what this is all about.

For those who are interested, John Howe is to give another of his great Urmston talks at the Hereford Grove school. For details, see under 'Local Events'

Following on from the evening, John would be delighted to receive any cine film from or about the area.

If you have or know someone who be willing to let John, keep or copy any footage you can contact him on the local clubs page on this site.

Would just like to say thanks to John Howe on a great presentation last night of his videos of old Urmston/Flixton. Nice to see the inside of the old baths in colour, the alterations of Church Rd/Flixton rd junction was great to see on movie film and the two fellas on a pub crawl of the area was a laugh. Seeing the original Victoria pub on film close up made me realise what a fantastic building it was. Brill!

I would just like to remind people that the history talk is on this Thursday night. You might learn something you didn't know about your area. Cheers!

John's lectures about Urmston are excellent and well worth attending. He is very knowledgeable about the area and has a great number of slides etc to illustrate the talk.
