Best Chinese takeaway in Urmston/Flixton
Topic posted by Mikel ... dated:25 February 2004
I would be interested to know what your views are as to what you consider to be the best local Chinese takeaway in our area.

For starters, (not intended as a joke) I have been trying them all, and have come to the conclusion that the one which offers best value for money and excellent food is probably the former Dragon City at the Curzon, not sure what its called now. My reasoning being that the food seems fresh and tasty, others I have found have been dowdy and possibly last nights cooking served up again, That's just my opinion of course but would like to know what others think is worth a visit.

The Urmston Takeaway on Railway Road re-opened today. I'm not sure why they were closed for a while, but they've put in a huge clear plastic curtain across the counter, to keep customers separate from the counter staff and the kitchen. Only one customer allowed in at one time. Open from 4.30 pm now. Still closed on Mondays.

Give the Urmston takeaway a go too, their char sui pork is really good and lean. I can recommend Char sui in black bean sauce, a slightly thicker than the usual watery black bean sauce you get at most places.

For something spicy, their Singapore Special chow mein is really good and not at all sweet.

I really like New Rainbow in Flixton, we've had about 6 or 7 takeaways from there and always nice, tried their crispy duck, chow mein,a few different starters and mains with noodles and always found it tasty and you get a lot for the price. I've not tried their sweet and sour or spicier dishes but you could give it a go before you give up on local Chinese takeaways.

I love a good chinese but since living in Urmston can honestly say I haven't found a decent quality meal.  I have tried The Pond Quay which was OK but my OH was ill and then I found they only have a hygiene rating of 1! that put me off.  The Golden Dragon is hit and miss and again, a low hygiene rating.  I don't like Lams Cottage I found the food too sweet and Hoho do a lovely sweet and sour chicken but are terrible for the spicier dishes (too sweet).  I was wondering if anybody had any good, consistent experiences with takeaway chinese food before I finally give up.  Many thanks.

" I'ld like to remind everyone that the Urmston Take-Away is still going strong, at 76 Railway Road. Despite the prosaic name it's a fine Chinese establishment and apparently run by the same people since the Ming Dynasty was going strong. Not somewhere that gets a lot of passing trade so they've always kept their standards high and rely on word of mouth. "

Still going strong. Nice to see your food being cooked right in front of you.

Can I mention a phone number, or does that conflict with Forum Rule 8: "blatant promotion of a business is not allowed"? Well, we seem to have been breaking Rule 8 on this topic for years now, so here we go: 0161 748 2288.

Golden Dragon on Old Crofts Bank Road off the Nags Head is excellent for a traditional Chinese (they also do Thai, try the Panang) and very reasonable.

You have to go some way to beat Straits Kitchen for quality though, its quite pricey though and you will have to add your own MSG!

Anthony, I think the family moved back overseas to enjoy their retirement and yes, the food was excellent. I never got over the finger-food combination being re-named to dim sum though

Does anyone know what happened to the original family who used to run the old Rainbow.  The new one is ok, but the chef from the previous owners was outstanding.  The 'crispy beef in garlic-hot-sweet-sauce' was pure delight.  The New Rainbow recipe just ain't the same.  If anyone knows where the old chef went, I would be so glad to know.

This sounds like an old joke:
Two drunks on a train one says to the other, "Is this Wembly?"
"No" says the other, "its Thursday"
"So am I" replies the first guy, "Lets have another drink"

Yes I know its Wednesday, but as your post was on early today, at a time when the Rainbow was not open, I thought maybe you were talking about last night. It was open last week anyway.

Looking at the 'just eat' website it appears that you can still order from there so it looks like it is open.

Hi, does anyone know if the Rainbow on Church Road has closed down?  We tried to order online and it said it was closed, we also tried ringing but to no avail.

I think the Rainbow on Church Road is very good.  Food is always hot, they will do items that are not on the menu and are quick to deliver!

Has anyone seen the new Chinese Takeaway on Flixton Road opposite Flixton House? It has the unfortunate name of  "No.2." I wonder if someone should have a word.......

Hi James

Must try 'Lambs Cottage' as it is just around the bend from me. I always thought of it as a Restaurant only, must also give the Rainbow a Go.

Hi Mike,
Long thread life on this one!
You are right about SK. Great quality of food and the only takeaway I've found than produces genuine Thai jasmine sticky rice i.e the stuff that you could, if so inclined eat effectively with chopsticks. The only thing that bugs me is their menu.... how many times can you use the initials SK!
As mentioned ages ago on here Lams Cottage near the Fox and Hounds is also worth a try. Proper restaurant food quality and some unusual selections like crispy crab claws.
Lastly, I recently stumbled onto the New Rainbow on Church Road. Their menu is fantastic with dozens of things that none of the other takeaways do. Quality, not quite as good as SK or Lams, but choice and price beat them both.

Our family have always used the Pond Quay, as the vegetables are crispy and the sauces are not glutinous. Their Dim Sum is to die for! Never had a bad meal and there is a free bottle of wine if you spend over a certain amount (can't remember how much). They always deliver on time, too.
