The old Urmston Council booked the Beatles to play at the Urmston Show in 1963.......at the time of the booking, the 'fab four' were not too well known... but by time they appeared at Chassen Park, they were world wide stars. Brian Poole and the Tremeloes and Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders were also on the Bill which was held in a large marquis. The tickets cost me 10/- (50pence) which was quite expensive. I remember not being able to hear for the screaming girls and the many ambulances on Flixton Road to help 'casualties.

Not only did the Beatles play in Urmston but so did The Rolling Stones, and The Searchers at Urmston Baths these were gigs put on by an ex.boxer I think called Frank there were more groups but cannot remember who (they weren't famous then).

The ex-boxer, refered to as "Frank?", above, is likely to be one Frank Evans, otherwise known as 'El Inglese', the only English matador. He was my landlord in Eccles, in the late 70's when I was a student at Salford University. He knocked about with George Best whom I met on a couple of occasions. I think that Frank still lives in Manchester, although he nearly 'bought it' when gored by a bull several years ago.

The Paper Dolls (Suzi Mathis now a DJ) appeared at The Princess Rooms, as did Johnnie Johnson and The Bandwagon - in the late 60s?

Have also remembered Gerry and The Pacemakers and The Four Pennies were on at Chassen Park (Urmston Show as was). The Ronettes were on at the Princess Rooms and the Wild Angels, where there was so much trouble with bikers, the venue was closed down. Anyone remember the Move (Wizard) being on at Woodsend Field - I couldn't go as you had to be 18. Anyone remember a little further afield what used to be at B&Q in Stretford? - Hard Rock. I saw Bowie, 10cc, Traffic, Don McLean, Elton John, Donovan and Gary Glitter there. Even Led Zepp!

I think The Beatles were smuggled into Chassen Park in a Council Refuse vehicle. Was it was the only year the August show made a profit

I was working on Urmston Council at the time and helped to erect the giant marquis. The next day the field was covered with jelly babies which is what everyone used to throw at them!

The Beatles played The Urmston show on monday 5th of August at Abbertsfield park, Chassen Road. They played inside a huge marquee with 4 other Acts ( I am trying to find out who these were) The compare on the night was David Hamilton
