There was a Miss Wolfendate who taught math at Delamere Rd Infants - does anyone know if she was related?

I had just turned on my computer to ask the same question (were Sir Arnold and Miss Wolfendale related?) As a slight correction, Miss Wolfendale taught at Delamere Road Junior School and surely taught all (academic) subjects, not just maths. I was taught by her in my first year there in 1949 and also in my third year (when we all expected to be taught by Mrs Birch!) She was, I think it fair to say, a no-nonsense teacher (who seemed incredibly tall to a small boy!). If only teachers were able to be as strict these days. The bamboo cane on the hand (for boys) and flat side of the ruler on the back of the leg (for girls) were used when deemed necessary - and I can't claim it did us any harm. If she is still alive I wish her well.

I have contacted Sir Arnold Wolfendale and received a delightful letter in reply, allowing me to confirm that Miss (May) Wolfendale, who taught at Delamere Road (Junior) School - after teaching at Godfrey Ermon's in Patricroft - was his aunt. I am sorry to say that she died some thirty years ago. Sir Arnold himself was, in fact, born in Rugby, but brought to Flixton aged 18 months when his family returned to their northern roots. He won a scholarship to Stretford Grammar School and then studied and lectured at Manchester University before moving to Durham.
